Biography
Stan Sidhu is Professor of Surgery and Head of the University of Sydney Endocrine Surgical Unit. This Unit has been in operation for more than 50 years based at Royal North Shore Hospital. He performs more than 500 thyroidectomies, parathyroidectomies and adrenalectomies per year specialising in large goitres, papillary and medullary thyroid cancer surgery, neck dissection, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy, redo parathyroid surgery and endoscopic or keyhole adrenalectomy . He has published a number of clinical outcome studies in thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy and adrenalectomy and currently his clinical research is focussed on voice outcomes following thyroidectomy utilising the adjunct of neural monitoring in thyroid surgery. In addition to his clinical load, he is an active translational cancer researcher with projects involving the use of non coding RNA as biomarkers of diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic effect in thyroid and adrenal malignancy. He is a senior researcher in the Cancer genetics laboratory of the Kolling Institute at Royal North Shore Hospital and is actively involved in a Phase 1 trial with the biotechnology company EngeneIC delivering non coding RNA for the treatment of patients with Stage 4 adrenocortical cancer whom have completed standard therapies. Professor Sidhu is President of Australian Endocrine Surgeons and Chairman of the Section Of Endocrine Surgery Royal Aust College of Surgeons. He has served as the Head of the Dept of Endocrine and Oncology Surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital, Public Officer of Australian Endocrine Surgeons and Australian Chapter Head of the Association of Academic surgeons, USA.. He currently sits on the Editorial Board of the Oncologist and the Annals of Surgery. He has mentored 21 clinical Fellows in Endocrine Surgery and supervised 10 doctoral students in laboratory research whom have progressed to be leaders in clinical surgery and translational cancer research both locally or in the own countries. He is currently a Sydney Medical School Foundation Fellow and opportunities exist for potential PhD candidates in his laboratory.
