Research Interest
My research interest is the ecology and ecotoxicology of river and groundwater ecosystems. My background is in bioassessment and the use of invertebrate communities to reflect water quality and health of freshwater environments. Mostly now I work on groundwater ecosystems, their function and how they respond to contamination, but I remain interested and actively researching pesticide, metal and other contaminants on rivers, ponds and streams. Working in groundwater ecosystems has unearthed a swag of undescribed species and opportunities for novel biological discoveries. We are working to provide assessments of groundwater ecosystem condition using microbial and invertebrate indicators, using traditional collect & count approaches as well as cutting edge genetic techniques. Through toxicity testing, we are also developing the worlds first guidelines to protect groundwater ecosystems from metals and various organic groundwater contaminants. Working in my lab requires a good sense of humour, willingness to help out across a range of projects and a passion for discovery.
