Biography

Maryam Khalid is the director of the Bachelor of International Studies program. Her research sits at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality in international studies, with a focus on representation and identity in and across cultural and political texts. She has published on gender, sexuality, race, militarism, violence, and popular culture in relation to a range of cultural contexts. She has a particular interest in the construction 'Western' and 'Other' of identities. Her current research projects engage with the gender, sexuality, and race as processes, practices, and analytical lenses in and across global governance discourse. This research has a specific focus on how discourses of (mainstream) international governance reproduce gendered, racialised, and sexualised identities through a variety of political and cultural texts, with a view to identifying and interrogating how representations are operationalised as discursive practices across boundaries of 'governance' and 'cultural' knowledge(s), and how these are anchored to social and political systems of power established and perpetuated across time and space.
