Biography
Michael Heimlich began in electronics and software in 1985 with Watkins-Johnson working in space-qualified RF and microwave mixers and then with Pacific Monolithics designing GaAs MMIC LNAs, up- and down-converters. After graduate studies at Stanford and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in microwave photonic contactless measurements for semiconductor defect recognition, he returned to Pacific Monolithics and then M/A-COM to focus on GaAs device and MMIC modelling, IC statistical design techniques, and microwave design flows. Dr. Heimlich left M/A-COM in 1995 to start and serve as Chief Technology Officer for VistaCAD, an electronic design automation (EDA) consulting company and SmartLynx, an EDA interoperability company. He joined AWR Corp. in 2001 where he continued work in EDA interoperability, design flow, and passive device modelling. In 2009, Dr. Heimlich received a CORE appointment to Macquarie University in wireless communications. He is the inaugural recipient of the David Skellern Electronics Research Grant. Associate Professor Heimlich received the BS (magna cum laude), ME, and PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has had research internships at Eastman Kodak (Rochester, NY, USA), IBM Research (Yorktown Heights, NY, USA), and M/A-COM (Lowell, MA, USA). Dr. Heimlich is a member of the IEEE and has served on the technical program committee for IEEE Design Automation Conference (DAC). He has published in a variety of areas including semiconductor defect recognition, antenna design, microwave photonics, and design flow and has been an invited speaker. He holds a patent in software interoperability and in reconfigurable electromagnetic bandgap structures. Dr. Heimlich's current research interests include RF/microwave MMIC and RFIC modelling, design flow theory, adaptive and reconfigurable wireless circuits, UWB for medical body area networks (MBAN), millimetre-wave packaging and GHz signal integrity.
