Biography
Professor Islam is currently a professor of law and the Director of Law Higher Degree Research (PhD & MPhil degrees) at Macquarie Law School. He studied Economics and Law at The University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh and obtained BA Honours and MA in Economics and LLB with first class in 1975. He also obtained LLM in 1979 and PhD in 1983, both in International Law, from Monash University, Australia, under the Monash Graduate Scholarships. He has nearly 40 years of legal teaching and research experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at universities in common law jurisdictions spanning both developed and developing countries since March 1975, which in the main include nearly 25 years at Macquarie University since February 1991. Professor Islam also served as an Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Law at The University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh and Head of the Department of Law at the University of Papua New Guinea.
Research Interest
ï‚§ The development and implementation of international law norms on women, peace and security. ï‚§ Gender, violence and law in societies experiencing transition (focusing on Asian contexts including Myanmar and Nepal). ï‚§ Equality laws and policies. ï‚§ Gender, sexuality, identity and the law. ï‚§ International human rights law and policy. ï‚§ Institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women. ï‚§ Law and society in Hong Kong. ï‚§ Empirical research methods. ï‚§ Socio-legal education.
