Biography
Neil has worked in Indigenous education as a primary, secondary and tertiary teacher. He has over 30 years of teaching and research experience in the field. His latest book (together with Juanita Sellwood, 2016), Learning and Teaching in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education (Oxford) is used in 14 teacher education programs across Australia. In 2015, he received the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence. Methodological expertise focuses on negotiated approaches to research, including those methodologies which are generated collaboratively in the field. His research focuses on Learning from Country. In recent years, he has analysed ways in which Indigenous knowledge of Country can be used to increase Indigenous student engagement in urban locations such as Sydney. He has documented specific approaches to learning in the Sydney region that connect Indigenous children to Country, provide them with a greater sense of belonging and wellbeing, and produce increased student engagement at school, including significantly reduced suspensions (for example, Harrison & Greenfield, 2011).
