Biography

I completed a combined MPsych/PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology at the University of Western Australia in 2008. Under the supervision of Dr John Hogben and Associate Professor Janet Fletcher, my PhD research focussed on applying the attentional blink in children and dyslexia. From 2008 to 2011 I worked as a postdoctoral research fellow with Professor Dorothy Bishop in Oxford Study of Children's Communication Impairments (OSCCI) at Oxford University. My work predominantly examined language lateralisation in adults and toddlers using functional Transcanial Doppler Ultrasound (click the doi for the Bishop et al., 2010 periodical below for a short video of the method). I returned to Australia in 2011 to take up a postdoctoral research fellowship at Macquarie University. With Associated Professor Genevieve McArthur, I am working on cognitive preparation and its relationship with reading. We have recently validated a gaming EEG system for ERP research with adults and are currently finalising a similar comparison in children. For more information see the Badcock et al., 2013 periodical below. One of our most fun ways to collect data is through a School Holiday Research Programme. Based on the Murdoch University Project KIDS, each day of the school holidays we invite up to 12 children to participate in a series of games and puzzles to help us learn about the brain.
