Biography
Peter Doyle is an author of fiction and non-fiction books. He has a Bachelor of Arts (Communications) from UTS and a PhD from Macquarie University. He is a musician (steel and slide guitar) with a long association with the Sydney blues, rockabilly, country and pub rock scenes and is an exhibiting visual artist. Peter is author of the novels The big whatever (2015) Get rich quick (1996), Amaze your friends (1998) and The Devil's jump. His non-fiction titles include Echo and reverb: fabricating space in popular music recording, 1900-1960 (2005), City of shadows (2005) and Crooks like us, (2009). He has also written essays, feature articles, reviews and short pieces for Meanjin, Heat, The Bulletin, HQ and The Sydney Morning Herald. He has been a columnist for Max and Sydney City Hub.
Research Interest
Peter's current research interests include sound studies and musicology, forensic photography, histories of Australian popular music, Australian popular cultures and 'true crime' writing. He continues to write fiction, his most recent novel being The Big Whatever (Dark Passage, 2015). He recently curated the exhibition Pulp Confidential: quick and dirty publishing from the 1940s at the State Library of NSW. Peter was a member of ARC-Discovery Project, Cultural Memory and Popular Music, with Prof Andy Bennett, Associate Professor Sarah Baker, Dr Alison Huber (Griffith University) and Associate Professor Shane Homan (Monash) as well as research partners in four other countries.
