Peter Keegan

Biography

Peter Keegan is a Senior Lecturer in Roman History, Latin Editor of the Female Biography Project, Chair of the Higher School Certificate Ancient History Examination Committee, and a member of the Australasian Society for Classical Studies Executive Committee. He has published Graffiti in Antiquity (Routledge 2014) and Roles for Men and Women in Roman Epigraphic Culture and Beyond (Archaeopress 2014). Both books came out of a long interest and writing on the epigraphic landscape in antiquity. The interest in official and non-official cultural practices associated with inscribing messages about life, death and human action in the ancient world resulted in a co-edited book entitled Written Space in the Latin West 200 BC to AD 300 (Bloomsbury Press 2013, reprinted 2015 in paperback); and to a sole-authored encyclopedia entitled Graffiti Through History: From Ancient Wall Carvings to Contemporary Street Art (Greenwood, forthcoming 2015). This latter book reveals the wealth of insights which only graffiti - alone of our historical sources, written or drawn by the full spectrum of human society (men and women; rich and poor; powerful and vulnerable) - can provide; and, in consequence, it will open a window onto ways of looking at our world (past and present, familiar and foreign) from a range of new and exciting perspectives - namely, through the eyes of the children and adults responsible for the graffiti texts and images.
