Biography
Personal profile Profile Phil's main research interests lie in applied linguistics and, especially, in informal language learning beyond the classroom in multilingual settings. He is the author of Teaching and Researching Autonomy in Language Learning (Pearson, 2011) and has co-edited several collections of papers ion autonomy and out-of-class learning. His interest in language learning beyond the classroom has recently led to research on multilingual lives and identities, study abroad and international students, and the roles of popular culture and new digital media in language learning. He has expertise in the use of a range of qualitative research methods. He is especially interested in narrative inquiry as an approach to research on language learning beyond the classroom and is co-author of Narrative Inquiry in Language Teaching and Learning Research (Routledge. 2013), the first applied linguistics research manual on narrative inquiry methods. Phil is keen to recruit Master of Research and PhD students with an interest in his research areas and a willingness to experiment with qualitative and narrative research methodologies
