Biography
Tom's research interests currently focus on contemporary war and strategy - in particular, the politics of war and the illusion of 'cost-free warfare'. His book - War, Clausewitz and the Trinity - interprets Clausewitz's theory of war and relates it to contemporary debates about the nature of modern conflict. Tom was previously Lecturer at the University of York where he taught and worked extensively on issues of post-war recovery, conflict analysis and security sector reform. He has experience working in war-torn countries includes Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nepal and Afghanistan. Tom has also published widely on statebuilding, intra-state war, the research-policy nexus, Afghanistan and Clausewitz in peer-reviewed journals such as International Affairs, Defence Studies, Parameters, Civil Wars, Journal of Statebuilding and Intervention and Conflict, Security and Development (see: https://york.academia.edu/ThomasWaldman). He has also written policy reports for the UK government and World Bank amongst others. Tom is Honorary Fellow at the Centre for Security Studies at the University of Hull, UK.
