Biography
Maria Lord studied music theory and composition at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Leeds, UK, before moving to London and undertaking further postgraduate study at SOAS, University of London, into South Asian music and society. She was the editor for the South Asian material for The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, to which she also contributed a number of articles. As well as teaching on the Music in the Cultures of South Asia course at SOAS and publishing academic work on music and South Asia, she has worked as a commissioning editor and writer of travel guides, specialising in South Asia, Greece and Central Europe. She has carried out extensive research into music in fin-de-siècle Paris and concepts of sound and space in South India. She is currently a research student in ancient history at the University of Wales.
