Biography
Andrew Stephens is a Professor in the Department of Oncology in the Monash health, Australia. After completing a PhD in the Department of Biochemistry at Monash University, Dr Andrew Stephens undertook a postdoctoral position at the University of Sydney using proteomics to discover novel antibiotic targets in bacteria. In 2006, he returned to Melbourne to establish a proteomics laboratory at the Hudson Institute, under the guidance of Professor David Robertson. In 2009, he established the Ovarian Cancer Biomarker group to specifically drive new research into the design and development of diagnostic tools, to improve the detection and management of ovarian cancers. Currently an Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) Research Fellow, Dr Stephens is passionate about reducing the mortality of ovarian cancer. A leading authority on the application of proteomics technologies, his work aims to better understand the development of ovarian tumours and identify specific biological events useful as markers of early-stage disease. He is also working to improve treatment and management of the disease through development of novel targeted therapies.
