Julie Panetta

Biography

Julie studied Medicine at Monash University, graduating in 1994. Her interest in neurology led her to a second year resident job at the Austin Hospital, and here she came into contact with paediatric neurologists. She decided to switch to paediatrics and commenced paediatric physician training. She started paediatric neurology training in 2003 at the Starship Children’s Hospital, Auckland NZ, and from there continued training in Melbourne at the Royal Children’s Hospital and then at the Mater Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. In addition to paediatric neurology training, Julie spent almost two years in neonates, nine months in paediatric metabolic medicine, and six months in child and adolescent psychiatry. Her time in metabolic medicine, under Dr Avihu Boneh at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, resulted in two papers, a poster and conference presentation at the 2003 International Congress of Inborn Errors in Metabolism (ICIEM) held in Brisbane. Julie has maintained an active interest in paediatric neurometabolic conditions. Currently she holds a locum position at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the Adult Inherited Metabolic Diseases Unit, as well as a VMO position at the Northern Hospital in paediatric neurology.  Aside from her interest in neurometabolic conditions, Julie has an interest in paediatric epilepsy and EEG. Away from work, Julie is a mother to three children, and plays violin at a high level, regularly participating in the Australian Doctors’ Orchestra as well as the local Melbourne medical group, Corpus Medicorum. She is passionate about breastfeeding, animal welfare and environmental issues also.
