Biography

  Professor Peter Ebeling, AO, is Head of the Department of Medicine in the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. He was also inaugural Director of theAustralian Institute of Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS). Professor Peter Ebeling AO completed his MBBS at The University of Melbourne. During his doctoral studies with esteemed medical scientist Professor Jack Martin, Peter's team discovered a new hormone, PTHrP, involved in cancer and normal calcium metabolism. Peter conducted further clinical research in osteoporosis as a post-doctoral fellow at the Mayo Clinic and as a visiting research fellow at the Botnar Centre, Oxford University Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences. Peter was Associate Editor of Journal of Bone and Mineral Research from 2008-2012. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Osteoporosis International and is Editor of Clinical Endocrinology (Oxf)and Editor-in-Chief of Bone Reports. He is Medical Director of Osteoporosis Australia; Board Member,International Osteoporosis Foundation; immediate past-President, Endocrine Society of Australia; past-President of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society (ANZBMS); and Councillor,American Society of Bone and Mineral Research, only the third Australian to be elected. He was on the NHMRC Academy (2009-2014) and now serves on the NHMRC Research Committee (2015-2018). Professor Ebeling has an h-index of 57; 13,500 citations; and has over 250 peer-reviewed publications, including in the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAUS, USA) and Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. There have been 136 publications over the last 10 years, and 83 publications over the last 5 years. In 2015, Professor Ebeling was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for his distinguished service to medicine in the field of bone health, through academic contributions and research initiatives in a range of administrative, executive and professional roles.

Research Interest

  Professor Ebeling's research interests include musculoskeletal health and diseases; public health aspects of vitamin D; post-transplantation osteoporosis; osteoporosis in men; and biochemical bone turnover markers.
