Dr Miriam Fanjul Fernandez

Biography

Miriam Fanjul Fernandez received her Bachelor in Science (major in Medical Biology) in 2007 from Oviedo University (Spain).  In 2008, she was awarded a Spanish Postgraduate Fellowship to start her PhD studies in the Cancer Research Group supervised by Prof. Carlos Lopez-Otin, leading researcher in molecular genomics and recognised as one of the most outstanding scientist in Europe. In 2009, she obtained a Masters of Science in Biomedicine and Molecular Oncology. She completed her Ph.D. in 2013 entitled "New animal models and next-generation sequencing approaches for the functional analysis in cancer progression", receiving the Extraordinary Award for the best Thesis in Medical Research.  In July 2013, Miriam joined to the Bruce Lefroy Centre at the MCRI as a postdoctoral researcher to continue her career in Neurogenetics, where she is involved in the identification and characterisation of genes contributing to neurodevelopmental and neurogenetic disorders. She is Chief Investigator of a recently awarded NHMRC grant project aimed to understand the neurobiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders, led by the 2014 Prime Minister's Prize for Science Prof Ingrid Scheffer. Miriam hold a joint appointment with the Population and Health group led by A/Prof Melanie Bahlo, WEHI, where she oversees and performs the bioinformatics and genetic analyses.
