Biography
Dr Zerina Tomkins (nee Lokmic) completed her PhD in 2005 (University of Melbourne) with a focus on angiogenesis, vascular maturation and regression. She undertook Post-Doctoral training (2005-2008) at the University of Munster, Germany, with Professor Lydia Sorokin, in the area of spleen development and localisation of marginal zone B cells in the spleen. In 2010 she completed a Masters in Nursing Science degree, followed by a year of graduate nursing training then a placement in the intensive care unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In November 2012, she was appointed as the Head of Vascular Biology Laboratory at Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. In August 2013, Dr Tomkins became the first vascular anomalies clinical nurse consultant at the Royal Children's Hospital. Today, she successfully combines basic science and clinical research with a nursing career and is an occasional pathophysiology lecturer with the School of Nursing at the University of Melbourne.
