Biography

Dr Augusto Zimmermann (LLB (PUC-Rio), LLM cum laude (PUC-Rio), PhD (Monash University)) is Senior Lecturer and former Associate Dean (Research) and Director of Postgraduate Studies at the School of Law at Murdoch University. He is the unit coordinator for two core units taught in the Law School: Constitutional Law and Legal Theory Dr Zimmermann is also a Commissioner with the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia; President of the Western Australian Legal Theory Association (WALTA); and Editor of the Western Australian Jurist law journal. He is also a Former Vice-President of the Australian Society of Legal Philosophy (ASLP). A prolific academic writer and the author of numerous articles and books, Dr Zimmermann has been awarded the 2012 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research, and also been awarded two consecutive Murdoch School of Law Dean’s Research Awards, in 2010 and 2011. Dr Zimmermann is a favourite among students.Twice nominated for the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, he has received the Law Lecturer of the Year Award 2013 by Murdoch Student Law Society, in recognition for the outstanding level of teaching, ongoing service and personal contribution provided to his students. Dr Zimmermann has been included, together with only twelve other Australian academics and policy experts, in the prestigious ‘Policy Experts’ – the Heritage Foundation’s directory for locating knowledgeable authorities and leading policy institutes actively involved in a broad range of public policy issues, both in the United States and worldwide.

Dr Zimmermann’s main areas of interest include Australian Constitutional Law, Brazilian Constitutional Law, American Constitutional Law, Brazilian Law and Society, Federal Theory, Human Rights Legislation, Law & Religion, Legal Culture, Legal History, Jurisprudence, and Rule of Law.
