Biography
Chris Smyth has been teaching journalism at Murdoch since 1999. He lectures in reporting, media law and ethics. Smyth started his career in journalism as a cadet reporter for Perth’s afternoon Daily News in 1982 after completing a psychology degree at the University of Western Australia. He has worked in newspapers in Australia and the UK. For 10 years Smyth was the state secretary of the Australian Journalists Association (now MEAA). His research interests include media law, journalists’ rights and labour history. He has co-authored a text book on journalism ethics and a pictorial history book on the Midland Railway Workshops. He is a member of the Murdoch team from journalism, PR and history that created Australian Asbestos Network. The website is a multimedia collaboration with medical professionals, which documents the history of asbestos. It also provides information for people wanting to know about asbestos and the diseases it causes.
