Biography

Ian Potter obtained my first degree from Oxford University where I obtained a BA in Zoology in 1962. I then moved to Australia and eventually to the University of New South Wales where I was a Senior Tutor and obtained a PhD for a study of the biology of lampreys, one of two surviving groups of jawless vertebrates. On the completion of my PhD in 1968, I was employed as a Postdoctoral Instructor at Duke University in the United States for a year. The Science Research Council in the United Kingdom then awarded me a Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue my studies on lampreys at the University of Bath. After two years, that University then appointed me firstly as a Lecturer and then as a Senior Lecturer. I moved to Murdoch University in 1976 to take up the inaugural position of Professor of Animal Biology and then eventually Research Professor, the position I still hold. During my time at Murdoch, I have spent periods visiting other Universities and Institutions where I undertook joint research. This included Guelph University, University of Toronto, Bath University, Munich University and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory.
