Biography

Dr Stanwell is a medical imaging research scientist with 20+ years experience applying magnetic resonance technologies in clinical and research radiology environments, both nationally and in North America. He is currently an accredited Medical Radiation Practitioner with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia, and Associate Professor in Medical Radiation Sciences. He completed his undergraduate study in Medical Radiation Science at the University of Newcastle before completing a 12-month Fellowship in Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. He subsequently completed a Doctor of Philosophy through the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney before working as a MRI physicist in the Department of Radiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA. During the same period he held the academic appointment of “Instructor in Radiology” at Harvard Medical School. He relocated to Newcastle in 2010, and commenced a full-time position at the University of Newcastle in 2011. Dr Stanwell's work role at the University of Newcastle consists of a balance of teaching (40%), research (40%) and administration (20%). He has attracted over $1.5million in research funding since joining the University of Newcastle. His grants support investigations into sports concussion, mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), delivery of radiotherapy for cancer treatment (anal canal cancer and cervical cancer), chronic neck pain and disordered eating behavior (functional MRI and food addiction). He currently supervises 6 PhD students (4 at University of Newcastle and 1 each at Australian National University and University of NSW) in the areas of sport-related concussion, food addiction and obesity, advanced neuroimaging in acute stroke, radiotherapy (cancer) treatment, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and computerised modeling of brain trauma (injury). His current interests include the chronic sequelae of repetitive brain injury, including the development of later-life cognitive dysfunction, and how MRI scanning can contribute to a more thorough understanding of the events that occur post brain injury. Dr Stanwell's work has been accepted for publication by the leading radiological journals including NeuroImage, Radiology, Investigative Radiology, American Journal of Roentgenology, European Radiology, European Journal of Radiology, and RadioGraphics. As well, he has published in specialist journals including Chemical Reviews, Scientific Reports, Stroke, Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism, Journal of Neurotrauma, Brain Injury, Sports Medicine, British Journal of Sports Medicine, International Journal of Sports Medicine, Medical Physics, Medical Image Analysis, and Nutrition Reviews. He additionally contributes to undergraduate teaching in Diagnostic Radiography, as well as providing specialist content to Radiation Therapy and Physiotherapy programs.
