Biography
Dr Welsh completed a PhD in the area of system identification in 2004. Specifically, his PhD thesis studied ill-conditioning that arises in numerous aspects of system identification. He also proposed several novel techniques and methods to avoid the problems that are associated with this ill-conditioning. Dr Welsh has over ten years of experience as an engineer working in industry. This work focused on control engineering. Frequently in this work, he used system identification methods to obtain appropriate models. This dual background gives Dr Welsh an important perspective of systems research. In particular, his goal is to emphasize strong theoretical contributions which have genuine practical relevance.
