Biography

Maree Gleeson is an immunologist who has held leadership and professional positions in health services, health policy, academia and medical research. Maree was Director of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (2006-2011), a joint venture between the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health. Under her 5 year leadership a strategic plan was implemented resulting in substantial growth in research funding; an increase in researchers from 400 to over 1000; and capital funding and construction of the $90 million medical research facility on the John Hunter Hospital campus at Rankin Park. Maree is currently a non-executive director on several boards including: Hunter Valley Research Foundation, Central Coast Local Health District, Hunter Water Corporation and NSW Health Pathology. Maree is currently Chairman of the Research Committee for the Central Coast Local Health District. Maree held previous board director positions on the Alzheimer's Australia NSW Board, Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games Trust, Nationwide Superannuation fund and with Research Australia. Maree has been involved in teaching undergraduate immunology in the medical, nursing and biomedical degrees. Maree has supervised BMed and BioMedSci honours students and research higher degree students. During her period as Director of HMRI, Maree established the INSIGHT mid-career researcher leadership development program. She assisted in establishing the women's leadership program and was a mentor to many researchers.
