Biography
Watt is the founder of Phylogica and is the principal inventor of Phylogica’s drug discovery technologies. Prior to his appointment as a Non-Executive Director, Professor Watt held the position of Chief Scientific Officer of Phylogica, where he continues to provide strategic scientific services to the company as its Chief Scientific Advisor. Professor Watt has published more than 55 peer reviewed papers, and has filed 24 patent applications many of which are granted in the US and Europe. Specialising in drug discovery biotechnology and molecular biology, he has attracted over A$10 million in research funding from Australia and the United States to develop the technology underpinning Phylogica. Previously Professor Watt founded InfaMed Ltd, now owned by Avita Medical Ltd, which commercialised an FDA-approved / CE-marked paediatric drug delivery device that he invented, which has been marketed internationally. He was appointed Adjunct Professor at the School of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Western Australia and is now Director of Research Services and Innovation at the Telethon Kids Institute, where Phylogica’s discovery research is carried out. Professor Watt carried out postdoctoral research in yeast genetics at Harvard and Oxford Universities, where he discovered and characterised proteins involved in maintaining genome stability. He has a doctorate in Molecular Biology from Oxford University and BSc (Hons) from the University of Western Australia.
