Biography

Malcolm is the Managing Director of Information Integrity Solutions Pty Ltd (IIS), a global consultancy specialising in data protection and privacy strategies. Malcolm is a founding Director of PRAXIS Limited and has been a Director of Bellberry Limited since 2006. As Australia’s Privacy Commissioner from 1999 to 2004, Malcolm led the implementation of first broad based private sector privacy law. Malcolm’s global reputation is built on his forward thinking on the handling and governance of personal information. Malcolm is also a director of the International Association of Privacy Professionals Australia New Zealand and was its founding President. He was a director of the US based IAPP until 2011. He has been a member of external Reference Groups for large research projects funded by the European Union and provided advice to APEC and private sector clients on cross border data flows including the APEC Cross Border Privacy Rule system and advice to clients on anonymisation. He was a long-time member of the Microsoft Trustworthy Computing Academic Advisory Board. Malcolm was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2016 Queen's Birthday Honours for significant service to public administration, particularly to data protection, privacy, and identity management, and to the community. Malcolm’s expertise in privacy was recognised when the International Association of Privacy Professionals honoured him in Washington DC with the 2012 Privacy Leadership Award. He was awarded the inaugural Chancellor’s Medal in 2004 for distinguished contribution to the Australian National University. He has degrees in Chemistry and Economics, is a Certified Information Privacy Professional through the IAPP and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
