Biography

 ·         Dr Wong obtained his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1994 and certificate of full medical registration in 1995. He subsequently developed an interest in internal medicine and successfully obtained the degrees of Master’s in Internal Medicine and Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom in 2000. ·         In 2003, he completed advanced specialty training in general medical oncology. This was followed by a 1 year clinical fellowship sub-specializing in breast medical oncology in Sunnybrook and Women’s Health Science Centre, Toronto, Canada where he trained under world renowned breast oncologists including Professor Kathleen Pritchard. ·         He was promoted to the position of consultant in 2006 and subsequently rose to the position of senior consultant and chief of breast team in the department of medical oncology, National Cancer Centre Singapore in 2009. ·         In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious Singapore National Medical Research Council overseas research fellowship to develop expertise in phase I clinical trials at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. During this year, he broadened his subspecialty interest to encompass gastrointestinal cancers, training under Professor Herbert Hurwitz. He also underwent further training in biostatistics and clinical research methodology. ·         Dr Wong is actively involved in clinical research. In 2005, he was awarded the Novartis Oncology Young Canadian Investigator Award. He has since been involved in more than 30 local and international pharmaceutical and investigator initiated clinical trials and held a number of institutional and national level research grants. He has contributed more than 50 abstracts and papers in both local and international oncology journals, including Journal of Clinical Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research and Annals of Oncology. His research interests include phase I trials, novel therapeutics, metronomic chemotherapy in combination with aromatase inhibitors, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer as well as triple negative breast cancer and he previously served as a member of the clinical trials steering committee at the National Cancer Centre Singapore. ·         Dr Wong is also actively involved in the education of medical students, doctors and nurses. He was clinical teacher in Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore from 2006-2011 and previously served as examiner for the final MBBS exams. He is also an invited lecturer at Nanyang Polytechnic School of Health Sciences where he delivers lectures in the field of oncology to advanced diploma nursing students. He was appointed a member of the Specialist Training Committee for medical oncology from 2009 to 2012 where he served to ensure standards of medical oncology training and as an examiner for the medical oncology exit exams. In 2011, he was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences, Duke-National University of Singapore. ·         Over the years, Dr Wong has actively served and contributed to a number of public institutions, learned societies and community organizations. He has held positions including Director of Public and Patient Education, National Cancer Centre Singapore, Deputy Director in the Division of Community Outreach and Philanthropy, National Cancer Centre, Vice President, Singapore Society of Oncology, Board Member, Chapter of Medical Oncologists of Singapore and Chairperson, Medical Treatment Fund subcommittee, Singapore Cancer Society. He is a member of the Singapore Society of Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and HepatoPancreatoBiliary Association of Singapore. ·         Dr Wong’s subspecialty interests are BREAST CANCER and GASTROINTESTINAL CANCER. He has published widely in international peer reviewed journals and major international cancer meetings in the area of breast cancer pathology, epidemiology, novel therapeutics, chemotherapy and endocrine therapy as well as in the area of colorectal cancer therapeutics.
