Biography
I am an internationally recognised science leader in the seafood industry, specialising in aquaculture and genetic breeding programs. I am a highly experienced professional most comfortable when operating at the interface between industry and research provider, heavily focused on the delivery of tangible outputs and commercial outcomes for the end user. I am also experienced in aquaculture R&D in an international development context and as a tertiary educator. In my current position as Program Manager for Production Innovation with the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre I am variously known as the "Pragmatic Professor", the "details man" and the "quiet achiever". In this role I have adapted my science based background and applied my major strengths of innovation and legacy building, to develop and implement a comprehensive portfolio of over 100 research projects, valued at >AU$30M. I work with business leaders, in both aquaculture and wild catch fisheries, to understand their needs, identify researchable constraints and build end user driven research partnerships to resolve these key issues. Working with a team of 40 researchers across multiple partners, my Program has delivered on its government mandated milestones and produced over 60 tangible outputs which have been adopted by end users. I can point to multiple legacies in industry as evidence of the strength of this cooperative approach to R&D. Whilst currently focused on Australian industry I have maintained my international profile, as evidenced by my election to the Presidency of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS). In addition to the President's role I also chaired the steering committee for World Aquaculture Adelaide 2014.
Research Interest
