Biography
An educator with over 20 years of experience, Dr Hulbert specialises in exploring the relationship between photography, culture and technology. His teaching is predicated on the notion that photography is a technologically determined medium, with a unique language that is critical to the understanding and experience of photography as an arts practice. He has taught in Australia, England, Hong Kong and Korea. Dr Hulbert is also the chair of the RMIT Photo Imaging Research Network, a collaborative network connecting different disciplines of photographic practice and discourse, with the aim of providing a central framework for activities and critical engagement between photography, culture and society. Dr Hulbert’s creative practice explores the significance of our ongoing relationship with the land and ways this informs aspects of the Australian national identity. An exploration into the formation of our cultural psyche, his work analyses the Aussie adventurer determination to discover and lay claim to sites, locations and territories. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including London, China and South Korea, and his work is held in private and institutional collections throughout Australia, China, England and South Korea.
