Biography
Professor Helen Winefield, BA, PhD Professor, Psychology and Psychiatry, University of Adelaide Research Interests: As a health psychologist, I am particularly interested in helping relationships, whether informal or professional. Animals often provide emotional support to people and/or encourage health-promoting physical or social activity. Sometimes however, pet-owners are overdependent on their pet to the exclusion of human company. Another set of health hazards can arise for people who work with animals in stressful conditions. Current Projects: In collaboration with A/Prof Anna Chur-Hansen, I am at present supervising a postgraduate thesis studying people with extreme and exclusive attachments to pets. Another project is looking at work stress in veterinarians.
