Biography
Matthew Sorell is senior lecturer in telecommunications and multimedia engineering in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Adelaide. He was previously with the Centre for Telecommunications Information Networking (CTIN) as Business Development Manager and Senior Research Engineer. Matthew is the research director of the Convergent Communications Research Group (CCRG), an inter-disciplinary grouping of academics and industry professionals investigating the technical, commercial, social and legal implications of telecommunications and media convergence. CCRG has been advising, for example, the Classification Board (previously under the Office of Film and Literature Classification) on matters related to content classification for new and emerging media. Most recently, he has chaired e-Forensics 2008 (www.e-forensics.eu) and is preparing for e-Forensics 2009: The International Conference on Forensic Applications and Techniques in Telecommunications, Information and Multimedia. On the rare occasions he is able to put his work away, Matthew also practices English bellringing at various belltowers around Adelaide, including the Adelaide Town Hall, where he is Tower Captain. He is also a well-known commentator on the music of Mike Oldfield and recently participated in a performance of "Tubular Bells" with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Matthew has also worked on the film "Ten Canoes" by Rolf de Heer, Peter Djiggir and the people of Ramingining, for which he developed a distributed audio recording system for filming on the Arafura Swamp. Matthew was the 2005 recipient of the Stephen Cole the Elder Prize for Excellence in Teaching, the 2006 [Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences] Faculty Prize for Excellence in Teaching and the 2006 Executive Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching.
