Biography
Jonathan Newby is an agricultural and rural development economist with experience working in Southeast Asia on a range agricultural development and livelihood projects. After completing a Bachelor of Natural Resource Economics (Hons I) in 2002 he worked for the Natural Resource Economics division of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) concentrating on economic analysis of water, vegetation, and fisheries policies. From 2006-2009 he conducted his PhD research on the economic impacts of a soil conservation and agroforestry program in the uplands of Bohol located in Central Visayas, Philippines. He is currently a post-doctoral research officer working in partnership with the National Agricultural and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) in Lao PDR where he contributes to a range of ACIAR projects. He also conducts research in conjunction with the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). His research interests include investigating the adoption of alternative farming practices in both upland and lowland farming systems. This research places the adoption of new technologies within a livelihood framework, where the resources of farming households are considered within the context of the institutional setting and other exogenous trends and shocks, to explore differential outcomes of technology adoption.
