Biography

I am a social nutritionist with a particular interest in population health. I use mainly qualitative methods to gain a better understanding of dietary change processes, population-wide dietary practices, and the way that culture shapes these. I am an experienced lecturer and public health nutritionist with 20 years experience in the tertiary education system. Practice experience as a dietitian and community nutritionist in primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. Experience in curriculum planning, tertiary teaching and practicum supervision of nutrition professionals, nutrition and dietetic students and diabetes educators in social and public health nutrition, health promotion, nutrition education and food and nutrition systems. As an academic researcher, my main interests lie at the intersection of human nutrition, public health and the social sciences. My PhD thesis- 'Diet and Domestic Life in 21st Century Australia: An Exploration of Time and Convenience in Family Food Provisioning' -is in the area of diet-related practices and household food strategies in 'time-poor' households.

Research Interest

I have current or previous involvement in funded research in a community nutrition evaluation research project, a multi strategy indigenous health project, household food research, and professional and consumer understanding of the intersection of sustainability and health issues in the food system. My aim is to apply qualitative social research methods and critical theory to the task of promoting equity goals, and strength-based approaches in food and nutrition research, policy and practice.
