Biography
I teach history at all levels in the School of Education and the Arts. My principal research interest is maritime history, with special reference to colonial impacts, post-coloniality and resource management. I specialise in the history of the colonial tropical sedentary fishing industries, pearl-shelling, bêche-de-mer (trepang) and trochus, and the interconnections between those industries in the western Pacific, northern Australia, and Propinsi Maluku, Indonesia. I also research and publish in Torres Strait history and contemporary issues, Australian South Sea Islander history and contemporary issues, and maritime and coastal environmental history. I'm on a number of editorial boards, an Honorary Research Fellow of Queensland Museum, and currently serve on the History Advisor Panel of Australian South Sea Islanders (PJ).
