Biography

Doctor Yibeltal Assefa Alemu: is a fellow at the School of Public Health, University of Queensland, with research and teaching roles. He is currently researching on Global health, equity, UHC, HIV/AIDS, TB, Hepatitis C and health systems. He is currently coordinating a counrse on Global Health and Infectious Diseases. He has substantial experience in working on HIV/AIDS at National and Global levels. He has conducted national surveys, surveillance and evaluations of HIV/AIDS programs in Ethiopia and other sub-Saharan Africa countries. He has also been involved in the development of implementation and treatment guidelines and plans and frameworks for the monitoring and evaluation of HIV/AIDS at National and Global levels since 2007. Dr Alemu has gained further program relevant experience over a range of duties: Deputy Director General: Ethiopian Public Health Institute (July 2013-June 2016): He was head of the Research and Technology Transfer; senior researcher on HIV/AIDS, TB/HIV and health systems; as well as Interim Executive Director of the International Institute for Primary Health Care; Director of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation: Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office, Ethiopia (June 2010-June 2013): Led the development of the Strategic and Operational Plans for the multi-sectoral response of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, led the design of the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system for the multi-sectoral response of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, and coordinated the triangulation and synthesis of epidemiological and behavioural data for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in in Ethiopia;

Research Interest

I just finalized two systematic reviews which are being utilized by the World Health Organization to update its policies and guidelines in the management of Tuberculosis. This will be translated to policy and practice by countries.I am also involved in development of these policies and guidelines as a member of the advisory group established by the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland.
