Biography
Tim, what does your everyday work entail? I work for Asciano which owns Australia’s largest national above rail freight operator (Pacific National) and Australia’s largest ports operator (Patrick). Through these rail and port operations Asciano is a major user of infrastructure which we gain access to through regulation. I am GM Regulation which means I spend my day interacting with economic regulators such as the ACCC and IPART and negotiating access to rail tracks from monopoly track providers to allow our trains to run. What are your research interests? I completed a PhD in applied econometrics at University College London a good few years ago now. My focus was on the economics of English soccer, a fairly new field at the time. I looked at match outcome uncertainty and its importance for revenue, the efficiency (or otherwise) of betting markets and productive efficiency of clubs. First job you ever had? A summer job that sticks in my mind was working during the shutdown at the British Leyland factory in Birmingham. I worked alongside Sooty and we went round the factory vacuuming up various chemical wastes into our tanker. It was my job to jump into the chemical goo we were removing and make sure that the pipe didn’t splay up.
