Biography

My interest in microbiology began in medical school and formed a basis for research projects in Antarctica during 1965. This work resulted in the award of the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Adelaide. During ten years of general practice, I was associated with the Department of Microbiology at Flinders Medical Centre and the University of Adelaide through the RACGP SA State research committee. I was elected FRACGP. I was appointed as the infectious disease epidemiologist in the South Australian Health Commission in 1978 and served on State and National committees addressing a wide range of infectious disease and environmental health issues. I was an Honorary Consultant to the SA Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science. As well as establishing an effective infectious disease surveillance system my Unit was able to contribute to the epidemiology of a range of “new” infectious agents including; Naegleria fowleri, Campylobacter jejuni, Cryptosporidium, Legionella pneumophila and longbeachae, Giardia, HIV, Coxiella burnetti and Shiga toxin producing E. coli. I was a foundation Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the RACP. I retired from the Health Commission in 2001 and took up a position with the Master of Applied Epidemiology program at ANU, finally retiring in 2010. Formal association with the University of Adelaide as an Associate Professor began in 1997 and has continued since where I assist with advice and student support in the areas of infectious disease epidemiology and environmental health within the School of Public Health. I was a CI on a three-year program titled "Building Capacity to Curb the Public Health Impact of Emerging and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases Due to Climate Change " in China.
