Biography
Dr Gary Misan is an Adjunct Associate Research Professor and Senior Research Fellow with the Department of Rural Health at the University of Adelaide. He is based in Whyalla. Gary has been active in rural health for over 15 years and has had a number of research interests during that time spanning health informatics, quality use of medicines, chronic disease self management, rural health, Aboriginal health, and long distance commuting among others. His current activity focusses on male health, male health policy, men's sheds, osteoporosis and program evaluation. He has over 50 peer reviewed publications to his credit and has been project leader, chief or associate investigator in various project and research grants, including several Category 1 Grants totalling more than $6 million since 2000. Gary is Company Secretary of the Australian Institute of Male Health and Studies, founding member and public officer for the South Australian Men's Sheds Association, member of Male Health Victoria, the Australian Men’s Health Forum and is President of the Whyalla Men's Shed. Until recently he was also the National Rural Health Alliance representative for the TenToMen National Longitudinal Study in Male Health Community Reference Group. Gary is married to Debra, has two adult sons and three gorgeous grandchildren. He is an accomplished woodworker and enjoys swimming and cycling among other interests.
