Biography
The focus of my honours work was an investigation of neuroplasticity in individuals suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Neuroplasticity refers to the brains ability to change neuronal connections in response to external stimuli, and is a process underpinning memory and learning. My work as a research assistant has allowed me to be involved in studies assessing novel interventions for improving rehabilitation therapy in stroke patients. These studies have investigated the use of aerobic exercise coupled with TMS interventions to improve recovery of motor function. My PhD work focused on how the process of healthy ageing modifies intracortical inhibition within primary motor cortex, and how changes in intracortical inhibition correspond to functional deficits in motor performance. This work has also used TMS as the main outcome measure. My current post-doctoral work focuses on the use of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques to improve the neuroplastic response to training in healthy older adults. In addition, Im completing studies using TMS in combination with electroencephalography to further investigate age-related changes in intracortical inhibitory mechanisms.
