Biography
As Dean of Medicine and Head of the Adelaide Medical School, The University of Adelaide, South Australia, Professor Symonds leads one of the largest schools at the University, noted for its highly successful researchers and research teams. The School has over 340 HDR students, a core of academic teachers and a large pool of enthusiastic and motivated clinical titleholders. The Adelaide Medical School offers a dynamic research-intensive environment that fosters excellence in interdisciplinary research and teaching, and nurtures the development of students to reach their full potential. It is the most successful recipient of research funds in the university. Indicative of its research success is the high number of grants received by the School, including in 2016 alone; >29 million category 1 grants, >2.25 million in category 2 grants and >6.4 million in category 3 and 4 grants. Professor Symonds experience in the development of educational programmes in inter-professional learning, primary care based learning, distance learning and overseas study. He was closely involved in the setting up of a new Graduate Entry Medical course in Nottingham and the Joint Medical Program in NSW. He has co-authored several papers on medical education as well as a number of undergraduate textbooks and has a master’s degree in clinical education.
