Biography
Dr Joanna Sundstrom is located at The University of Adelaide's Waite campus where she has been based since 2006, initially as a PhD student in the field of plant salinity tolerance and currently as a postdoctoral research fellow. Since 2010, Dr Sundstrom has worked in the Department of Wine and Food Science in the Wine Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology (WMMB) Group, led by Professor Vladimir Jiranek and Associate Professor Paul Grbin. Dr Sundstrom has worked on a number of projects in the WMMB group that aim to better understand how yeast and bacteria, that are used in the production of wine, are able to tolerate the stressful wine making environment. Information from these research projects helps guide other work within the group to develop new strains of yeast and bacteria useful to the wine industry. Dr Sundstrom also works on an Australian Research Council funded project aimed at investigating how yeast cells communicate with each other during over-crowding and nutrient limitation, with a focus on the impact this has during fermentation.
