Biography
My research bridges three discipline areas: Neuroscience, Physiology and Exercise Science. It involves detailed human studies on the neurophysiological mechanisms responsible for changes in motor performance throughout the lifespan. I have played a major role in defining the changes that occur in the central nervous system (CNS) with advancing age, and in factors that influence the ability of the mature nervous system to reorganise. I specialise in the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation as a tool to painlessly and non-invasively investigate specific features of the cortical control of hand muscles in older adults. I also use technically demanding recordings of single motor units, which are performed in only a few laboratories worldwide, to develop seminal new ideas on the spinal control of movement with ageing, training, and exercise.
