Biography

My research focuses on the sensory signalling of the bladder and gastrointestinal tract, and how the aberrant signalling from visceral organs is linked to the symptoms of common disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), overactive bladder (OAB) and interstitial cystitis (IC). We currently have a number of projects focussed on the neuronal connections within the peripheral and central nervous systems which maintain normal physiological function between bladder and bowel and how these interactions are essential for the development of comorbidity between abdominal and pelvic pain pathologies. Our research uses a number of electrophysiology techniques including whole cell patch clamp, calcium imaging, single-cell PCR and ex-vivo single afferent recordings from bladder and colon to further understand the intricate communication of neurons .
