Biography
Dr Mark Gibson - BSc (Hons), PhD, B. Pharm(Hons). Dr Gibson is an experienced researcher with a long track record in the field of the cell and molecular biology of extracellular matrix. In particular he is studying the biology of elastic fibres, structures responsible for tissue elasticity. In the early part of his career Dr Gibson was responsible for identifying, cloning and sequencing of several of the molecular components of these structures. He has since focussed on the molecular assembly of these complex structures and on the role they play in growth factor regulation. This process becomes aberrant in incurable fibrotic diseases involving major organs such as heart, lung, kidney and liver and genetic diseases such as Marfan syndrome. Currently Dr Gibson's lab is investigating the role of elastic fibre-associated Latent TGF-beta Binding Proteins (LTBPs) in cellular and animal models of fibrosis and fibrotic diseases.
