Biography

Ali is a senior research fellow and lecturer at Geotechnical and Hydrogeological Engineering Research Group (GHERG), FedUni, working in the areas of open-pit geomechanics, foundation systems, soil dynamics and cutter soil mixing. He is currently supervising 8 PhD students, mentoring one postdoctoral researcher, and leading the geotechnical and geomechanical division of GHERG. He works in close collaboration with GHERG’s industrial partners including Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (Victorian Government), Energy Australia, GDF Suez, AGL Energy, Australian Road Research Board (ARRB), BAUER Maschinen and Wagstaff Piling. He is a professional member of Engineers Australia and Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS), and the president of AGS VIC-LVGG committee. After graduating in BSc water engineering in 2005, Ali worked as an engineer in the area of numerical simulation of coastal dykes at Soil Conservation and Watershed Management Research Institute (SCWMRI) in Iran. In 2006, he returned to the academy and completed his MSc on the topic of slope stability and excavation in 2008 at University Science Malaysia (USM), and his PhD on the topic of shallow and deep foundation systems at University College Dublin (UCD) in 2010. In 2011, he was funded by UCD and worked as a Post-Doctoral researcher in offshore geotechnical engineering at UCD Geotechnical Research Group (GRG) for one year. In 2012, he moved to Australia and joined GHERG at Monash University as a research fellow/lecturer (Level B) and subsequently took a senior position (Level C) after GHERG joined FedUni in 2014. Ali has taught several subjects of geotechnical engineering and numerical modelling, and he has been an active geotechnical consultant on a variety of national and international scale projects in Australia, Europe, Asia and the Middle-East.
