Biography
Steve completed his PhD at Heriot-Watt University in 1992 on an EU funded Brite Euram project investigating machine tool wear. He then joined the University of Glamorgan, more latterly this has become the University of South Wales, as a lecturer where he was promoted to Professor in 2003. At the University of South Wales he fulfilled various roles including Head of School (2010 to 2014), led engineering research submissions to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and the 2014 Research Excellence Framework and developed teaching collaborations with British Airways and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry in Greece.
Research Interest
Steve’s major research interests centre around condition monitoring and the application of advanced signal processing and AI techniques to help solve engineering problems. His work has developed novel systems able to monitor and control coal fired and gas fired burners in the utility and steel sectors and in collaboration with colleagues has developed a technique to make significant reductions in the emissions emanating from glass melting furnaces. In this work he has collaborated with many major industrial and university partners, including; RWE, Tata, Doosan Power Systems, Gas Natural fenosa, GDF Suez, Airbus, ENEL, EON and EDF and also national SME's such as Global Combustion Systems and James Proctor Ltd, Institute of Power Engineering, Poland, the Technical University of Munich and the University of Stuttgart Germany, Queen's University, Canada, City University, Hong Kong, Chongqing University, China and the University of Zaragoza, Spain. Most recently his work has focussed on oxy-coal combustion where he coordinated a 9.76M€ project with 14 EU partners.
