Biography

Dr Tessa Daffern's PhD investigated spelling and writing acquisition in the middle and upper primary school years. Prior to commencing as an Assistant Professor at the University of Canberra in 2016, Tessa was a Subject Coordinator and Marker in undergraduate and graduate education courses at Charles Sturt University (CSU). Tessa was also a member of the Research Institute for Professional Practice, Learning and Education (RIPPLE, CSU). In 2014, Tessa represented CSU at the Trans-Tasman Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition after winning the CSU 3MT Judges' Choice Award and the People's Choice Award. As a Registered Provider of Professional Learning with the ACT Government Teacher Quality Institute (TQI), Tessa regularly engages as a presenter and consultant at pre-service and in-service teacher professional learning workshops and seminars. Prior to commencing her doctoral studies, Tessa had been a successful classroom teacher, learning support specialist and coordinator. In 2014, Tessa was presented a Recognition of Excellence Award by the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn Catholic Education Office for her contributions and achievements. In 2012, Tessa participated in the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) National Pilot Study and was certified as a Highly Accomplished Teacher by the TQI.Prior to becoming an educator, Tessa experienced life as a musician, performing as a classical flautist with professional orchestras such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
