Biography

Prof Lea Delbridge heads the Cardiac Phenomics Laboratory in the Department of Physiology at the University of Melbourne. Her research goals are to understand the cellular disease mechanisms and identify potential treatment targets in different forms of cardiac myopathy and failure. Prof Delbridge leads preclinical research in the field of cardiac disease mechanism â€ understanding how intrinsic genetic and local hormonal factors have a role in shaping cardiomyocyte and cardiac pathophysiology. She has advanced single myocyte electromechanical investigative approaches and developed novel microscopy technologies and experimental tools to characterize myocyte function and calcium handling processes.    Prof Delbridge completed her PhD and a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Teaching at the University of Melbourne She held post‐doctoral training positions at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada) and Loyola University (Chicago, USA). At Loyola, she was appointed an International Fellow of the American Heart Association (Dept Physiology). On returning to Australia Prof Delbridge was awarded a National Heart Foundation Australia career fellowship before transition to an academic appointment. In 2011 she was the first woman to be appointed Professor in the Department of Physiology at Melbourne. Prof Delbridge has published ~ 125 peer–reviewed papers in many high recognition Physiology journals including J Physiol,  Am J Physiology (Heart and Regulatory sections), Pflugers Archiv, Life Sciences, PLoS One, Exp Physiol, Clin Exp Pharmacol & Physiol, and speciality journals Circulation, Circulation Research, Hypertension, and Autophagy.
