Biography

As a psychologist I focus on - (1) Mental Health Assessment & Treatment - (2) High Performance Sport Psychology - (3) Psycho-legal Reports & Mediation - (4) Professional Development in Applied Psychology. In my combined speciality of sport psychology and counselling psychology I treat mental health disorders and work with internationally competitive athletes across the globe. I also provide high performance workshops, seminars and key note addresses for elite sporting teams/squads, business corporations and professional development in mental health for Health and Allied Health Professionals with programs being endorsed by The Australian Psychological Society (APS), The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), The Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine (ACRRM), The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC), The Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). A little spool on training psychologists... As a psychologist in private practice and academia I believe that psychologists need to be informed by the knowledge established in practice as much as by the knowledge established through research. The collective knowledge of those in private practice is an untapped resource due to the dominance of the 'publish or perish' research culture of the university setting. As a consequence the practitioner's knowledge is seen as a 'second class citizen' relegated to the ranks of statistical insignificance. The scientist-practitioner model that is communicated as the model of psychology education should be informed equally by the practitioner and the researcher. Ultimately, expertise as a practitioner develops through real life practice experience more so than through building up research acumen. So more time needs to be given to practice in training programs and more time given to the practitioner to inform and teach in training programs.
