Simon Finnigan

Biography

 I am primarily interested in advancing brain monitoring techniques, to provide new information which can guide clinical decision-making and ultimately, help deliver improved outcomes for critically ill patients (e.g., extremely premature babies; stroke patients) I have been a member of UQ Centre for Clinical Research since 2010, when I returned to Australia to take up a NHMRC Career Development Fellowship. Prior to then I was a Research Fellow at Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience and St James Hospital (Dublin). In addition to my UQCCR position I also currently hold a Research Fellow position within Metro North Hospital & Health Service (MNHHS). My primary field of expertise is clinical neuroscience: particularly using electroencephalography (EEG) - and also imaging methods, where relevant - to assess & monitor brain dysfunction in neurocritical or at-risk patients. I currently collaborate with Prof Paul Colditz (Professor of Perinatal Medicine) and other Royal Brisbane & Women's Hospital (RBWH) clinicians including Dr Andrew Wong (Director of Neurology & Stroke) and Prof Alison Mudge (Director of Research & Education, Internal Medicine), and various other collaborators. I have 20 years' research experience and am on the Editorial Board of 'Clinical Neurophysiology' (official journal of the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiologists). I've authored numerous papers published in high-quality international journals such as 'Stroke', 'Journal of Neuroscience' and 'Clinical Neurophysiology'. Throughout my career I've worked productively on a range of multi-disciplinary clinical research projects, including R&D collaborations with pharmaceutical industry partners Roche (Switzerland) and GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (UK), and medical technology industry partners Intel Digital Health (USA and Europe), BrainZ Instruments (Auckland) and Natus Medical (USA). I'm highly motivated to continue to pursue translational research which can ultimately help improve patient outcomes and the quality of human lives in the face of brain damage or disease; and help deliver socio-economic benefits.
