Stan Steindl

Biography

Clinical Psychologist and Trainer, Dr Stan Steindl, completed post-graduate studies at The University of Queensland, first through a Master of Clinical Psychology at the School of Psychology and then later through a PhD at the School of Medicine. He developed skills in Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT), which continues to be part of his practice today. His PhD studies, completed in 2005, involved working with combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol dependence, and through this he learned about Relapse Prevention approaches, but also Motivational Interviewing. In 1999, Stan established Psychology Consultants Pty Ltd, where he carries out a general clinical psychology practice working with anxiety and depression, stress and trauma, substance misuse and addiction, and relationship counseling. He is a clinical supervisor and Adjunct Associate Professor at The University of Queensland, School of Psychology, and provides private supervision of psychologists, social workers and others. In 2007, Stan participated in a Motivational Interviewing (MI) Train-the-Trainer workshop in Chicago, USA, becoming a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). Training others in MI is a keen interest and he regularly conducts introductory and advanced workshops for a wide range of health professionals and organisations throughout Australia. Stan’s clinical practice now incorporates his CBT and schema-focussed therapy skills on the one hand, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness-based approaches on the other. In particular, in 2009 he participated in training in Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) in Joshua Tree, USA. In 2011, he has participated in a Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) Train-the-Trainer workshop, again in Chicago, USA.
